About the
research
The focus of our Technology and Innovation theme is to develop and utilise innovative technologies and approaches to improve human health across the lifespan. We do this by leveraging state-of-the-art technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), 3D food printing, freeze drying and other novel food drying technologies, 24-hour health monitoring and digital technologies. Thus, our research is motivated by the urge to preserve health & save lives, as well as enhance food and nutrition sustainability. Our focus currently is on the following three areas:
Utilising Artificial Intelligence for a healthier tomorrow
- Using deep learning algorithms to analyse the Abdominal Aortic Calcification (AAC) a marker of high cardiovascular and other chronic disease risk.
- Using machine learning to detect Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) from 3D facial scans.
- AI for other health related conditions such as falls and fractures.
Innovative food technologies for a healthier tomorrow
- 3D food printing
- Freeze drying
Innovative monitoring & digital health solutions for a healthier tomorrow
- 24 hour blood pressure, glucose, physical activity and stress monitoring
- Webapps, gamification
- Food composition database data portals for dietary nitrate/nitrite intake assessment
